He may only be a rising sophomore, but Drayk Bowen has already made quite an impact. As a freshman last year at Andrean High School, Bowen helped the Fighting 59ers go 10-4 and advance to the Class 2A semi-state game. And for him, the season was an extension of his love affair with a game he fell in love with watching it on television with his father. “As a five-year-old kid, I wanted to try it because I loved watching it and I fell with the game as soon as I started. I started playing football in Hammond and went on to play Pop Warner. I love the game because I can compete no matter who is on the other side. When I’m playing, it’s like I can let everything in the world go and just be free and play the game,” Bowen told Sideline Prep Sports Report. Last year, Bowen accounted for 43 yards on 12 carries and hauled in three receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. On defense, he amassed 50 total tackles, 29 of which were solo stops. And, he has earned a spot on several people’s radars as a player to watch this season. Despite the praise, Bowen takes it all in stride. “It feels good to know that my hard work is paying off, and I’m being noticed, but I’ve never really thought about it like that. I want to be the best, obviously, but when you act and work like you’re at the top, you’ll start to fall off. I work and play like I’m the underdog. I want to succeed so bad that I haven’t thought about rankings. I always go to work the same and try to beat myself each and every day. I have a great support system that pushes me every day – my parents, coaches, etc. all push me to be better,” he told Sideline Prep Sports Report. A year after losing in the semi-state game, Bowen is confident Andrean can not only get back, but go one step further. “The team goal is to win state. Last year, we just missed our shot, and we’ve got some unfinished business to accomplish. For me, I hope to achieve better statistics than I did last year because it will help the team and help me to continue to be on radars,” Bowen said. He has already found himself on the radar of at least one college program – the University of Cincinnati, who has already offered. “I was so shocked getting the offer because of how young I am and the caliber of their program. What I look for in a school is for it to be a second home. I want that home away from home feeling. I also want a place where I can get a good education and degree. Lastly, I want the college to have a winning culture. I want to go in and compete for a spot and win a lot,” Bowen said.
