George Washington ready to take a huge step forward

Ready to take the next step. That’s the feeling surrounding the Indianapolis George Washington High School football team this season. While the Continentals finished 2-7 last year under third year head coach Steve Moorman, there is plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Of the seven losses, five were by 14 points or less, including a two point setback at Paoli and a seven point loss to Cardinal Ritter in the sectional tournament. Furthermore, this program has been building for this moment, according to Moorman, who enters this season 44-31 overall. “Going into our third year, we feel like the program is headed in the right direction. The first two years we were building from ground zero,” Moorman told Sideline Prep Sports Report. The veteran coach had a few players who came over from Arlington High School that were on its 2017 sectional title team. “I’m so grateful for the players who came to Washington, one of which was selected to play in this summer’s North-South Game. They provided a foundation. We had a good freshman group that first year, kids who had to play. They are now juniors. I know we’ve been through a tough time, and I credit our coaching staff for staying engaged with our players during this time. Watching them this week in conditioning, they look excited,” Moorman said. Not only are the coaches excited, so, too, are the players, and George Washington has some talent back this year. The Continentals bring back nine starters, many who play on both sides of the football. One player Moorman is expecting big things out of is quarterback JaQuan Bridges, who is a three-year starter. “I know he will make better choices in our offense this season,” Moorman said. Moorman is optimistic the third year will be the charm and his squad will have a breakthrough. “We lost some close games last year, and we made young mistakes. I think this year we get over the .500 hump,” Moorman told Sideline Prep Sports Report.
