Through the years, the Heritage Christian High School football team has had its fare share of accomplished players, especially at the quarterback position. Senior Max Milton is no exception, as the signal caller who wears the #4 jersey for the Eagles, has made quite a name for himself not only at the Indianapolis school, but across the Hoosier State. A season ago, Milton led the Eagles to an 11-2 campaign, which ended against eventual state champ Western Boone in the regional round of the IHSAA tournament. On the season, he completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,426 yards and 32 touchdowns. “I was in the first grade when I started playing. I always had a football in my hand growing up, so, naturally, I gravitated towards the quarterback position. My dad and I used to play catch all the time as a young kid. I’ve never played anything but quarterback,” Milton told Sideline Prep Sports Report. While he is considered one of the premier quarterbacks in Indiana, Milton takes the talk in stride. Rather than focus on accolades, he’s focused on improving and putting Heritage Christian in a position to be successful on Friday nights. “It’s an honor to be selected as one of the best quarterbacks in the state, but, at the same time, I don’t put much thought into that. At the end of the day, that’s just a list, and I still have to go out and perform every Friday night and do what I can for our team to win. That’s what’s most important,” Milton said. The senior admits he knows there are many top quarterbacks in the state. “I’m grateful to be on it with them, but I am no where near satisfied and the team and I have way more to prove,” Milton told Sideline Prep Sports Report. While some players enjoy the physical nature of the game, Milton enjoys the mental aspect that comes with playing quarterback. “It’s the most mentally challenging position in all of sports. If you’re not prepared every single play, you will make a mistake that costs the whole team. I take pride in studying and learning defenses. Knowing what the defense is going to do before the ball is snapped is one of my favorite things about the game. It is a chess match and you have to be great at the mental side of the game,” Milton said. Milton acknowledges that both he and his teammates have put in a lot of quality time and are ready to make a title run in 2020. “The main goal for this season is to win a state championship. That’s the goal and nothing short of that. The most important thing is winning games. We had a great season last year, but we want to build on that. That sectional championship is just a building block for this team. Individually, a goal of mine is to win City Player-of-the-Year, but that comes after the team. Most importantly, we want to win that state championship,” Milton said. Covid-19 has impacted Milton’s recruiting and his ability to participate in the Elite 11 camp, as well as others, but that hasn’t completely stopped schools from noticing him. He tells Sideline Prep Sports Report he is being recruited by the likes of Indiana State and Western Illinois.
