Prior to the seventh grade, Zach Vode never saw himself on a football field. Fortunately for him, he listened to his peers and decided to give it a try. As a result, he not only has had a banner career at Hobart High School as a wide receiver and defensive end, he recently committed to Western Michigan University as an outside linebacker. “Seventh grade was my first year. I was hesitant about playing, but my friends all talked me into it,” Vode told Sideline Prep Sports Report. According to Rivals, Vode is a two-star prospect and a three-star prospect according to 247Sports and is the 24th overall prospect in Indiana. As a defensive back and wide receiver last year, Vode recorded 77 stops and five interceptions on defense and hauled in 43 catches for 787 yards and four touchdowns. Vode tells Sideline Prep Sports Report he takes the talk of him being one of the best in the Hoosier state in stride, and was surprised to get offers. “I was very surprised about all the success. I had no idea that I was going to get any offers, and I didn’t really plan on it. It just kind of happened,” he said. Now with his college choice behind him, Vode is focused on taking Hobart to the state championship game. A season ago, Hobart lost 29-24 to East Noble in the Class 4A semistate game and haven’t won a state title since 1993. “I want a ring. This is my final season, and I want to stay healthy, have fun and make it one to remember,” he said. As for Western Michigan, Vode tells Sideline Prep Sports Report he opted to commit there because it gave him everything he was looking for. Ball State and Central Michigan had also offered. “It felt like home, and I like the way they play. I love to hunt and fish, and they have plenty of that up there. I think I’ll fit in just fine. Whatever they want me to do, I’m going to do it,” Vode said.
