Blake Austin has heard all the stories. The New Palestine High School senior is quite familiar of the success his father and uncles had while playing football. And, he’s looking to write his own story and make his own history. So far, so good, as the wide receiver has helped the Dragons capture back-to-back Class 5A state championships. “Playing football in my family is just tradition. My dad and my uncles played and always had success, and I wanted the same for myself. Writing my own narrative of my football legacy is really fun since all my family members have their own,” Austin told Sideline Prep Sports Report. After a sophomore season that saw him play in four games and only pick up 97 yards, Austin exploded onto the scene as a junior – reeling in 21 receptions for 379 yards, including a 76-yard strike from quarterback Lincoln Roth. “My favorite part about playing receiver is that you must be a play maker. Every receiver is unique in their abilities, but you must be able to make the big play when your team needs it,” Austin said. Despite the gains, Austin continues to work on his craft and work in the weight room, where members of the New Palestine coaching staff have commented on how much stronger he entered July compared to when the season ended last November. “I’ve worked so hard to be in this position. But, at the end of the day, I’ve never arrived and there is always work to be done. I’m not surprised with my success because of the work put in by my entire team and I. We all make ourselves better, and I feel that hard work defeats all doubt because I know I gave it my all,” Austin said. New Palestine enters the season with a 28-game win streak and will look to win its third consecutive state title under Kyle Ralph, who is 88-4 at the helm. Austin said the team goal is another state ring. “Not very many people can say they won three state championships in a row, and that would be extremely awesome to be able to say,” he said. And, along the way, Austin is hopeful he can show colleges he can perform at the next level like many others who have come through the program. “For me, it’s just to prove myself to college coaches that I have the ability to play at their level and exceed everyone’s expectations,” said Austin, who has offers from Indiana State, Illinois State, Eastern Illinois, Grand Valley State and Lake Erie.
